D&D Miniature and Dice Holder

My brother-in-law is a huge fan of D&D. He worked with an artist to draw one of his characters based on a description. The artwork is amazing (see below). As a Christmas present I hired someone on Fiverr to create a 3D model based on the image and I 3D-printed a couple of custom miniatures. I also created a wooden dice tray and miniature holder for storage out of walnut.

Incredible artwork drawn by Giulia Valentini

I worked with an artist with account name sergeisirik and after a couple rounds of back-and-forth he sent me the final mesh model that I think captures the image really well! I only had to modify it to add the base and join the bird to the main figure:

Once the model was finished I 3D printed it using a Form2 SLA printer in two sizes.

Larger model in the UV curing chamber.

Then I painted them both:

Directly out of the curing station the material needed some cleanup. The face area in particular came out a bit rough.
The base coat applied.

The smaller mini was pretty challenging to paint with the same level of detail. It looks good on the table, but doesn't hold up to the same level of scrutiny a nice resin molded mini does. Next time I'll try using a different resin in the printer. These were printed with the Grey Pro resin. I think using a resin with less of a matte finish will be helpful in the future.

Unpainted small mini.
Some detail is lacking in the smaller mini and it was difficult to paint. The picture makes it look worse than it is, but it was still a challenge!
Here are some Star Wars minuatures I've painted for comparison.

I also made a dice/mini holder out of Walnut to hold the mini and a set of resin dice:

Starting block of walnut.
Straight from the mill next to a 3D-printed mockup
Both halves complete with Foam added for cushioning. When the holder is shut the foam touches the top and bottom of the mini just enough to keep it from bouncing around.
The two halves magnetically attach.

As a final touch, I 3D-printed and painted a holder for the larger miniature – mostly to provide some protection since parts of it are fragile!

Model available on Github

And here is a holder for the mini to fit into the chest:
